D23 Expo reveals a lot, still not enough

English Translation below.

Good Lord, the D23 Expo kicked off yesterday in Los Angeles. It is THE event you can’t miss as a true obsessive Mouse fan and it’s organized by D23, the official club for all things Disney. Just like every year, a whole section of the show is dedicated to Disney parks, cruises and other vacation destinations to reveal never seen before details, secrets and previews of current projects.

And there are lots of current projects to the Disney parks : the massive California adventure revamping that is still in full swing, Shanghai Disneyland’s very secretive construction that has started a few weeks ago, Walt Disney World’s Fantasyland expansion, soon to finish Toy Story Mania construction at Tokyo-Disney-Sea-the-most-beautiful-park-in-the-world, very anticipated Hong Kong Disneyland’s Grizzly Gulch, Mystic Point and Toy Story Land, and the upcoming-but-when Ratatouille attraction planned for the parisian Walt Disney Studios park.

As you can see, D23 Expo management really had serious stuff to showcase… but they decided to focus mainly on projects that local fans care the most – read US parks (you NEED to have a look on InsideTheMagic). It’s a shame that such sexy projects as those planned to the asian parks only get a ridiculously small Shanghai Disneyland model which won’t tell us anything more that we already know. A shame. And no need to tell you there is nothing about Ratatouille and absolutely no mention at all to Disneyland Paris. But is it really a surprise?

Anyway, let’s focus on the good things because every (chunk of) project presented at D23 looks very carefully done. The cheap and tacky Eisner years now seem far behind us. California Adventure upcoming main street looks gorgeous, and this seven dwarfs coaster wagon concept brings a new kind of technology for a roller coaster, and we didn’t see anything really innovative on a Disney coaster for years.

There is also a special feature made by WDI just for the D23 Expo : Destini, an animatronic that interacts with you by analyzing the way you react, but without any actor behind like they did with Mr Potato Head or the walking and talking trash. It’s all artificial intelligence! I find very interesting the fact that Walt Disney Imagineering’s expertise isn’t locked on park projects anymore but on cruises and other resorts as well. A wind of change seems to blow in the Imagineering building. Hopefully this will reach Marne-la-Vallée and not only US and Asia parks…
