Five million of visitors in 2020. This is the challenge that Efteling set to itself. To achieve this, they’ll have to expand the family oriented target and attract teenagers with a solid thrill ride: a dive coaster from manufacturer Boliger & Mabillard set to open in 2015. The Dutch theme park has just revealed the name and the very first concept art of the new attraction: Baron 1898. The coaster will feature a storyline, here summarized by the Rue Efteling blog:

Gustave Hoogmoed (Gustave High Courage in English) is a baron operating a mine in the south of the Netherlands, where a gold nugget was found. He hires workers to find more gold, but they are frightened by strange “weird sisters” (mythical creatures? spirits? white ladies?) who warn them not to take the gold out of the mine. Then, no minor dares to enter the mine anymore, which will become abandoned …

This mining theme reminiscent of the industrial revolution will become yet another incarnation of the steampunk style in amusement parks, and of course I love it! Especially in regard of such a promising artwork.

To follow the construction until opening day, Efteling has the bright idea to broadcast a making of series on YouTube. Do not miss the first episode (including English subtitles!) above.
