Disneyland’s extensive rehabilitation of classic attraction Big Thunder Mountain Railroad finally came to an end after 14 months. The main work was the complete retracking of the 34 years old (!) roller coaster, but new special effects have been added in the third lift-hill to create an explosive climax scene to the ride. The initial goal was to replace a scene where big rocks were swinging directly above the train in order to simulate a collapse : this effect had been instantly deactivated in all parks since one of these swinging rocks actually fell on a train and its passengers a few years ago in Disneyland Paris. These new special effects are manly made of video projection mapping and smoke, and they look amazing (at leaston video) while adding a brilliant modern twist on a classic attraction.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad joins the list of ‘attractions of a certain age’ that have received a technological update to modernize the show to avoid they look outdated or become obsolete next to new and younger rides. Of course, you can’t help wondering when/if these updates will come to Disneyland Paris. Since all the efforts are currently aimed at making the Walt Disney Studios a decent Disney park, these updates would be a great addition on Star Tours, Phantom Manor, Pirates of the Caribbean (…may I ask with no Jack Sparrow Please?) and Big Thunder Mountain in the Disneyland Park.
