Mystic Manor opens in Hong Kong Disneyland

In just a few days, the enigmatic Mystic Manor will finally open its doors in Hong Kong Disneyland. But as previews for employees and a few local fans started this weekend, pictures and video have already started to appear online. And the least I can say is that the result seem beyond the expectations of the Disney fandom.

Walt Disney Imagineering had the great idea to combine on this dark ride several great technologies and artistic inspiration they already use on other successful attractions: among others Pooh’s Hunny Hunt trackless vehicles (Tokyo Disneyland), video mapping projections like we can see on Disney Dreams (Disneyland Paris) and a storyline linked to other Disney attractions. Your host Lord Henry Mystic is a member of the ‘Society of Explorers and Adventurers’ just like Harrison Hightower III, the owner of the amazing Tower of Terror in Tokyo Disneysea. You can also see a link to the now closed Adventurers Club from Downtown Disney at Walt Disney World, as well as the old Explorer’s Club Restaurant (now re-named Colonel Hathi’s Pizza Outpost) but Disney never officially confirmed those two. Anyway it’s so cool that WDI creates that kind of mythologies. Also, have you noted how visual effects and audio animatronics live together so well? Unlike what many people think (because of Toy Story Mania), video hasn’t replaced real props and animatronics yet. Look how they interact with each other so well in Mystic Manor! So don’t panic, audio animatronics and real props are not over yet.

But more importantly, it’s so great to discover new attractions created from A to Z by Walt Disney Imagineering, with no movie franchise as a base. Unfortunately, these original attractions are increasingly rare in Disneyland Paris and the US Disney parks – Asian park seem to better balance these two kinds of rides. Franchises seem to become crucial in the theme park industry. Hopefully Lord Henry Mystic and the insanely cute Albert the monkey will convince park managers to chose original themes for their attractions more often. Themes that actually come from the imagination of Walt Disney Imagineering.
