Review: Aquanura at Efteling

Like many other disciplines, the theme park industruy has it trends. Parks can be smart and jump on a new technology, or they can just copy the others like idiots. For the past ten years, they all came up with wooden coasters, interactive dark rides, 4D or 5D cinemas, and splash battle rides. But the latest trend is definitely water fountain shows. In my opinion, they often look kitsch and smell like the 80s, from Las Vegas to Dubai. In fact, this kind of show never really left theme parks but Disney California Adventure clearly restart the the trend of water fountain shows with World of Color. This year, Disneyland Paris and Universal Orlando follow the lead together with Efteling (Netherlands) which presented last week its own water fountain based night time spectacular : Aquanura. So let’s just not wait Europa Park comes up with a copy of it and give Aquanura a proper Quality Control!

This year, Efteling celebrates its 60 years old, and this show makes us relive our memories spent in this amazing park. For the grand premiere, they did a very smart move by broadcasting the show live on Youtube. And as a warm-up, there was this very long opening show including local (and mostly tacky) singers and boring speeches of suits – though Efteling president Bart de Boer opened the ceremony in a very nice and friendly way, i.e. the complete opposite of the formal Disney way. One hour later, they kicked off the show for the very first time.

So, Aquanura is a pretty average night time water fontain show based on three main elements : fountains, lights and music (and a tiny bit of fire jets, indeed). No fog, no laser, no fireworks, no video projections and even fewer 3D video mapping, but above all : no story. The show consists of a succession of acts suggesting the most iconic attractions and fairy tales of Efteling. Which is somewhat reminiscent of Remember, Dreams Come True, the night time show that celebrated… Disneyland’s 50th birthday! Well well well… But don’t get me wrong, I have absolutely nothing against «abstract» shows in amusement parks. It’s just that they usually produce shows with a real-though-often-too-bold storyline, which is the opposite of Aquanura. So no story, okay, why not. But the only issue is that it’s a little bit tedious at some point. Maybe you just shouldn’t have seen Disney Dreams and its many special effects before watching Aquanura? Clearly, if I have to compare both shows, the point goes to Disneyland Paris.

And suddenly, after 12 very short minutes of show (Disney Dreams lasts 20 minutes), you realize that it’s already over and you would easily ask for more. You can feel like it’s not enough or just too short. Actually, the show quite looks like a showcase for the fountain manufacturer WET, more than a show especially designed for a theme park of that scale. But on the positive side, Aquanura allows you to enjoy once again the ridiculously beautiful soundtracks of Efteling. Most of them have been composed especially for the park. These are without a doubt one of Efteling’s most precious gems.

But something tells me that Aquanura is only te version 1.0 of a night time water show likely to evolve and get a proper storyline over the years. Which may be pretty clever if it’s true. I mean , I do think the show will satisfy the audience during a few years. Then, Efteling will just have to insert new effects and storylines to improve the show. Just like Tower of Terror many updates. A way to spread the investment on several years if you want.

I take this opportunity to tell you once again that I think Efteling is one of the most brilliant amusement parks in Europe. For this anniversary year, they edited a book (also released in english on their online boutique) on the park’s 60 years. Efteling may be 60 years old, their comunication strategy is fresh and healthy on the new media. The Efteling Youtube channel posts a pretty cool (SWAG!!) video every week and they just opened a new website and a new Facebook page in french to reach a larger audience. Efteling is now open 365 days a year, has ambition and good ideas. Man, it feels so good to say so for an amusement park!

Happy birthday Efteling, we certainly look forward to 60 new years of setting the bar higher in the theme park industry!
